Israel strikes Hezbollah in Lebanon after attacks, widening Iran war
Israel has launched air strikes across Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah positions after the Iran backed group fired missiles and drones at Israeli territory in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Israeli military said it struck Hezbollah sites nationwide, including in the Shiite group’s stronghold in the southern suburbs of Beirut, as part of a broader campaign that also includes ongoing strikes on Iranian targets. Explosions rocked Beirut in the early hours, sending residents fleeing by car and on foot, while smoke was seen rising from areas hit in and around the capital. Israel said at least one projectile launched from Lebanon was intercepted, while others fell in open areas without causing major damage, and warned that it holds Hezbollah fully responsible for any escalation along the border.
