Guardiola says he is hurt by human suffering in wars

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola says he feels deeply hurt by the suffering of civilians in wars and violent conflicts around the world. Guardiola recently missed a press conference before his team’s league match at Tottenham after giving a speech in Barcelona in support of Palestinian children at a charity event. He has often spoken about issues beyond football and said he will not stop, despite suggestions that he should focus only on the sport. Speaking ahead of City’s League Cup semi final second leg against Newcastle, he became emotional as he described watching news reports of children being killed or injured in different conflict zones. He mentioned violence in Palestine, Ukraine and Sudan, as well as recent shootings by United States immigration agency ICE, as events that have left him angry and determined to speak out. Guardiola said modern […]

Kepa targets more League Cup heroics in Chelsea reunion

Arsenal goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga says he is ready for another big night in the League Cup as he prepares to face former club Chelsea in the semi finals. The Spaniard was Arsenal’s hero in the quarter finals, saving Maxence Lacroix’s penalty in an 8–7 shoot out win over Crystal Palace after a 1–1 draw at the Emirates. Kepa, who joined Arsenal from Chelsea in the summer, has played all his games for the Gunners this season in the League Cup. He believes the competition now offers the club a realistic chance to end their trophy drought stretching back to 2020. “Right now, if you want a trophy, and that’s something that we want, we have to fight against good teams,” he said, looking ahead to the two legged semi final. “Both semi finals are big games, but we’ll prepare well, […]

Maresca slams Delap for ‘stupid’ red card as Chelsea edge Wolves 4-3

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca criticised striker Liam Delap for a “stupid” and “embarrassing” red card during the club’s 4-3 League Cup fourth-round victory over Wolves on Wednesday. Delap, making his first appearance since August following a hamstring injury, was sent off after receiving two yellow cards in just seven minutes as a substitute. His first booking came for wrestling Yerson Mosquera to the ground, while the second followed a reckless aerial challenge on Emmanuel Agbadou. The dismissal marked Chelsea’s sixth red card in just nine games this season — a trend that left Maresca visibly frustrated. “For today we have a very stupid red card, that was completely unnecessary,” Maresca said after the match. “It’s embarrassing — two yellow cards in seven minutes. Both could have been avoided. “After the first yellow card I told him four or five times […]

Howe confident Newcastle will find ‘X factor’

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe insists his side will soon rediscover their attacking edge despite struggling for goals since the departure of star striker Alexander Isak. Isak, 26, completed a British record £125m move to Liverpool on deadline day, leaving a huge void in the Magpies’ attack. Howe responded by signing Germany international Nick Woltemade from Stuttgart for a club-record £69m, while Yoane Wissa arrived from Brentford in a £55m deal. But Newcastle’s frontline has yet to click. Woltemade, 23, scored on his debut in a 1-0 win over Wolves on September 13, but drew a blank in Sunday’s goalless draw at Bournemouth. Wissa, meanwhile, is still sidelined with a knee injury. Speaking ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup third-round tie against Bradford City, Howe admitted the transition will take time but expressed faith in his new-look attack. “In an ideal […]

Maresca: No surgery planned for Cole Palmer injury

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that Cole Palmer is unlikely to need surgery despite his ongoing groin problem. The 23-year-old forward was forced off after just 21 minutes in Chelsea’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford on Saturday. Speaking to reporters, Maresca said the club’s medical team had not mentioned surgery as an option.“The medical staff didn’t tell me anything about surgery. I don’t think that will be the case, at least for now,” he explained. Maresca praised Palmer’s determination to play through discomfort:“He made a big effort to be available. He passed the test before the game, but he wasn’t 100 percent. He wanted to help his teammates, but the pain was too much, so we had to take him off. It’s a situation we’ll monitor day by day, week by week.” Palmer is expected to […]
