Dangote Redeploys Sacked Refinery Engineers to Remote Posts

The Dangote Group has rehired the engineers it dismissed last month from its refinery, but is reassigning them to remote locations across Nigeria, including states with security concerns. The engineers, some of whom were graduate trainees, have been offered new positions under "Dangote Projects Limited." Their new postings are to sites in Borno, Zamfara, Benue, Ebonyi, Kebbi, Niger, and Sokoto states. These assignments include a coal mine in Benue, road construction sites, and rice processing plants. According to the offer letters, the employees have 14 days to report to their new locations or face termination. However, the affected workers have raised serious concerns. They state that the letters do not provide specific office addresses in these states and that some of the postings are in areas known for insecurity. The workers' union, PENGASSAN, has advised them not to accept the […]

Reps Drop Legal Move, Opt to Mediate Dangote Refinery Labour Dispute

The House of Representatives has decided to mediate the labour dispute between unions and the Dangote Refinery, abandoning a more confrontational legal approach. This follows a heated debate over a motion that sought to use the NEPZA Act to shield the refinery from union activities, arguing it is a strategic national asset in a Free Trade Zone. The motion's sponsors claimed recent strikes disrupted production and violated laws that exempt such zones from standard labour rules. However, other lawmakers cautioned against taking sides without a proper investigation. They argued that the parliament must hear from both the labour unions and the Dangote Group before making a decision. After intense discussions, the House rejected the motion to enforce the NEPZA Act. Instead, it unanimously adopted a resolution mandating its leadership, led by the Speaker, to personally mediate between the two parties […]

Court Restrains PENGASSAN From Cutting Gas Supply to Dangote Refinery Amid Nationwide Strike Threat

The National Industrial Court, Abuja, has restrained the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) from cutting crude and gas supply to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE. The interim order, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Subilim, followed an ex-parte application filed by the refinery’s lawyers, led by Ogwu Onoja (SAN). The court barred PENGASSAN, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) from halting supply or embarking on any action that could cripple refinery operations. Justice Subilim ruled that the balance of convenience was in favor of Dangote Refinery, warning that the planned strike would “irreparably damage” its operations and disrupt essential services to the Nigerian public. The matter was adjourned to October 13, with the interim order valid for […]

Ndume Urges Tinubu to Act Like a Dictator to End PENGASSAN–Dangote Refinery Dispute

Senator Ali Ndume has urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action — even if it means acting like a dictator — to resolve the escalating standoff between the Dangote Refinery and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). Ndume, who represents Borno South, made the call on Monday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time. “The best thing is for the president to sign an executive order calling them off. He has the right to dissolve them. In this case, I don’t mind if he acts like a dictator because some situations require very drastic measures,” he said. The crisis began after PENGASSAN accused the Dangote Refinery of unlawfully sacking 800 workers for joining the union. On Saturday, the association directed its members nationwide to down tools, calling the move a violation of Nigeria’s […]

JUST IN: Dangote Refinery denies mass sack, says workforce shake-up targets sabotage

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has confirmed a sweeping reorganisation of its operations and workforce, but denied reports of a mass sack of workers. In a letter dated September 24, 2025, signed by Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management Femi Adekunle, the refinery said the move was triggered by “many recent cases of reported sabotage in different units of the Petroleum Refinery leading to major safety concerns.” The 650,000 barrels per day facility, which began production in 2024, directed affected staff to hand over company property to their line managers and await clearance for entitlements to be computed by the Finance Department. A senior official of the refinery, however, dismissed media reports of an en masse dismissal, insisting the exercise was a reorganisation to curb sabotage and plug leakages within the plant. “Yes, the letter is correct. But […]
