Ga Dances and “Oobakɛ” Greeting Surprise Travelers at Kotoka Airport

Arrivals at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on Wednesday night, September 4, were greeted with spirited Ga dances and the traditional salutation “Oobakɛ,” in a colorful display celebrating Ga culture and language. The surprise welcome featured the Obaake dance and was streamed live on social media by Chorkor Youth TV, drawing attention online. Organizers of the cultural showcase remain unknown, and it is unclear how long the initiative will continue. The event comes in the wake of the recent “Akwaaba vs Oobakɛ” debate, sparked by signage at the newly renovated Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park. That debate has reignited calls for stronger recognition of Ga identity and heritage in Accra’s public spaces.
