Korle Bu Hospital Provides Free Heart Surgery for 27 Children.
The National Cardiothoracic Centre at Ghana’s Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has successfully completed 27 free heart surgeries for young children, including five open-heart and 22 keyhole procedures. The initiative was sponsored by Kinderherzen International, a Germany-based charity, and the Gerald Asamoah Foundation.More than 40 heart specialists arrived in Ghana last week to assist in these surgeries and supplied essential equipment and consumables to ensure continued support. Dr. Kow Entsua-Mensah, the Centre's Director, praised the foundations for their generosity, which has enabled the hospital to provide this life-saving care at no cost. The program aims to guarantee timely intervention for every Ghanaian child born with heart disease, regardless of financial means.Anja Schlarb, Head of Kinderherzen International, expressed her excitement about the program's success in Ghana, noting similar initiatives in countries like Eritrea and Burundi.
