Nine states take lead on new tax harmonisation laws

Nine states have so far domesticated Nigeria’s new tax harmonisation laws designed to end multiple taxation and uncoordinated levies. The states are Bayelsa, Anambra, Ekiti, Gombe, Kogi, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kwara and Zamfara, while 27 others are still at various stages of adoption.​ The reforms build on a model Tax Harmonisation Law developed by the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee for states and local governments. The aim is to tackle illegal collections, remove non-state actors from revenue drives and create a clearer, more predictable tax environment for businesses and citizens.​ Committee chairman Taiwo Oyedele said it is vital for states to pass their own harmonisation laws to address multiple taxation at sub-national level. Army neutralises top bandit kingpin Kachalla Kallamu in Sokoto

Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division in Sokoto have neutralised a notorious bandit kingpin, Kachalla Kallamu, during an operation in Sabon Birnin Local Government Area. Troops rescue six kidnapped victims in Kogi

Troops of the Nigerian Army, working with other security agencies, have rescued six kidnap victims during a joint operation in Kogi State.​ The operation was carried out around the Osara–Okene axis after security forces received credible intelligence on the movement and location of the kidnappers and their hostages.​ Acting on the information, the troops and other security personnel launched a coordinated raid on the criminals’ hideout, engaging the suspects and forcing them to abandon the captives and flee into the surrounding forest.​ All six victims were rescued alive and taken into safety, where they received medical checks and counselling before being reunited with their families.​ The security agencies vowed to sustain the offensive against criminal gangs operating in Kogi and neighbouring states, calling on residents to continue sharing timely information to support ongoing operations.​

Dino Melaye Faces Court Over Alleged ₦509.6m Tax Evasion

A former senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District, Dino Melaye, has been dragged before a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Magistrate Court over alleged evasion of ₦509.6 million in personal income taxes for 2023 and 2024. According to filings, the FCT Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) accused Mr. Melaye of failing to pay his assessed Personal Income Tax of ₦234.9 million (2023) and ₦274.7 million (2024), totaling ₦509,608,000.00. Past Underpayments In addition to the recent assessments, FCT-IRS said Mr. Melaye underpaid his taxes in 2020, 2021, and 2022. In 2019, while still in the Senate, he declared ₦1,258,334 in income but paid only ₦85,000.08 in tax. In 2020, he declared ₦1,383,334 but remitted just ₦100,000.08.
