UG Scholar Criticises Mahama’s UN Reparations Call, Cites Africa’s Role in Slave Trade

The Head of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has criticised former President John Mahama’s call for reparations during his recent address at the United Nations General Assembly, describing the demand as misplaced. Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, Dr Asah-Asante acknowledged that many have hailed the ex-president’s speech as bold and visionary. “It is an apt description of a speech from a leader who is visionary, who fears nobody, and a leader worth his salt. I have no problem with that, and I concede to a large extent that yes, the speech had what it takes to be presented at that forum,” he said. However, he disagreed with the focus on reparations for slavery, arguing that Africa cannot be absolved of responsibility in the transatlantic slave trade. “The president touched on […]

Mahama launches road project for 166 constituencies

President John Dramani Mahama has launched a nationwide road initiative that will see 166 constituencies benefit from 40 kilometres of road construction each over the next four years. The President made this known during the sod-cutting ceremony for the Dawhenya-Afienya-Dodowa Road Project in Accra on Tuesday, September 16. He explained that the selected constituencies were identified as having some of the most deteriorated road networks in the country. Government Allocates GH¢1 Billion to End Double-Track in Senior High Schools

The government has announced a GH¢1 billion allocation to phase out the double-track system in senior high schools across Ghana. The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, revealed this plan during the inauguration of a new staff accommodation facility at Accra Girls’ Senior High School. The investment, expected to feature in next year’s budget, will be sourced from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and directed toward addressing long-standing infrastructure deficits in the education sector. The double-track system was first introduced in the 2018/2019 academic year as a temporary solution to manage overcrowding in schools after the Free SHS policy significantly increased enrolment. Students were divided into two groups who alternated in cycles, making it possible to maximize existing facilities. While it provided a short-term fix, the system was never intended as a permanent feature. Haruna Iddrisu explained that the proposed investment […]

Ghana accepts Nigerians, other West Africans deported from US

Ghana has begun receiving West African nationals deported from the United States, including Nigerians, President John Dramani Mahama announced on Wednesday. According to Reuters, Mahama confirmed that a first batch of 14 deportees — comprising Nigerians, a Gambian, and other West Africans — had already landed in Accra, with Ghanaian authorities assisting in their repatriation to their respective countries. “We were approached by the US to accept third-party nationals who were being removed from the US, and we agreed with them that West African nationals were acceptable because all our fellow West Africans don’t need a visa to come to our country,” Mahama explained. He added that the arrangement was logical since ECOWAS citizens already enjoy visa-free access to Ghana. The development comes amid Washington’s intensified deportation drive under President Donald Trump, who has expanded removals to “third countries” as […]

Ghana MP Questions ‘Rushed’ Removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo

Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South and Vice Chairman of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee, has strongly criticized the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. He described the move as procedurally flawed, unfair, and rushed. President John Mahama on September 1, 2025, dismissed Chief Justice Torkornoo with immediate effect over alleged “stated misbehaviour,” following recommendations from a constitutional committee established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution. The decision came just hours after the President received the committee’s report on a petition filed by Ghanaian citizen Daniel Ofori. Notably, this was only one of three petitions submitted against the Chief Justice. Speaking on JoyNews’ Newsfile, Baffour Awuah questioned the speed and selective handling of the petitions, noting that there is no constitutional requirement demanding such urgency. “In the absence of timelines, what was the committee in a […]

More recently, he was attacked by supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at the premises of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). According to the GJA, the attacks have left him undergoing prolonged medical treatment and therapy in California, USA. Despite occasional attempts to return to active reporting, he continues to endure severe pain and trauma. Mr. Dwumfuor disclosed that following a meeting with Latif, where he received a full account of his ongoing treatment and the drawn-out court case, the Association resolved to formally push […]

Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony at the Presidency on Thursday, September 4, 2025, President Mahama described the Reset Agenda as the government’s blueprint to restore hope, rebuild trust, and drive inclusive development. “The Reset Agenda is this administration’s blueprint.
