IPOB Lawyer: Federal Government Has No Legal Basis to Detain Nnamdi Kanu

A member of the legal team representing Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has insisted that the Federal Government lacks any legal justification for his continued detention. Barrister Onyedikachi Ifedi, in a strongly worded statement on Sunday, dismissed recent media publications describing IPOB’s push for Kanu’s acquittal as “political theatre,” calling them “government-sponsored propaganda.” He argued that Kanu’s arrest in Kenya in June 2021 amounted to extraordinary rendition, a process prohibited under both Nigerian and international law. Citing the Court of Appeal’s October 2022 judgment, Ifedi noted that the court had declared Kanu’s rendition unlawful and struck out the charges. IPOB Announces 12-Hour Lockdown for Biafra Heroes Memorial Day The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has declared a 12-hour lockdown across southeast Nigeria and parts of the south-south on May 30, 2025 , to honor those who died in the 1967–1970 Nigerian Civil War. The group labeled the day as Biafra Heroes Memorial Day , urging residents to stay indoors from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM for reflection and tribute.
