Trump Sets 15% Global Tariffs After Court Decision

US President Donald Trump has declared he will impose a 15% tariff on imports worldwide, following a Supreme Court decision that struck down his previous global taxes. Initially, Trump had planned to replace the scrapped tariffs with a 10% levy on all goods entering the US. However, on Saturday, he announced via Truth Social that the rate would rise to the maximum permitted under Section 122 of the 1974 Trade Act. This temporary law allows tariffs to remain for up to five months before requiring congressional approval. The original 10% tariffs were scheduled to begin on 24 February. It is unclear if the 15% rate will start at the same time. Countries like the UK and Australia, which had agreed to 10% import deals, face uncertainty under the new rate. Trump criticized the Supreme Court’s ruling as “ridiculous” and “anti-American.” […]

Trump Imposes New 10% Global Tariff

The United States has entered a new phase of trade tensions after President Donald Trump announced a 10% global tariff, replacing a set of duties recently struck down by the Supreme Court of the United States. The move comes days after the court ruled, in a 6–3 decision, that the president had exceeded his authority in imposing sweeping tariffs under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). The justices concluded that Congress had not explicitly granted the executive branch the power to introduce such broad-based import taxes. Chief Justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, emphasized that when Congress delegates tariff authority, it does so clearly and with defined limits. The ruling was supported by the court’s three liberal justices, along with conservative justices Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch. Justices Clarence Thomas, Brett Kavanaugh, and Samuel Alito dissented. […]

China Condemns US ‘Double Standards’ Over New Tariff Threat

China has accused the United States of applying “double standards” after President Donald Trump announced plans to impose an additional 100 percent tariff on all Chinese imports starting November 1. In a statement released on Sunday, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce described Trump’s remarks as “a typical example of double standards,” criticizing Washington’s approach to trade relations. Trump had announced on Friday that the new tariffs would be imposed in response to what he called China’s “extraordinarily aggressive” export restrictions on rare-earth minerals — materials crucial for global technology and manufacturing industries. He also hinted that his planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping later this month might be canceled. Beijing said the United States has intensified economic pressure on China since September, warning that such actions have damaged mutual trust and disrupted trade negotiations between both nations. Trump’s Tariffs Face Supreme Court Test After Appeals Court Ruling

A federal appeals court has ruled that President Donald Trump unlawfully relied on the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose sweeping tariffs during his second term. The decision casts doubt on the legality of duties that reached as high as 50% on imports from India and Brazil, and up to 145% on Chinese goods earlier this year. American businesses have already paid more than $210 billion in tariffs deemed illegal by US courts. If the ruling stands, companies could be entitled to massive refunds from the US Treasury. Trump acknowledged the potential fallout, saying the government might have to “give back” the revenue collected. He confirmed his administration is preparing an appeal to the Supreme Court, which could be filed as early as Wednesday. The appeals court set an October 14 deadline for its ruling to take effect.
