Troost Ekong explains decision to retire from Super Eagles

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost Ekong has explained why he chose to retire from international football ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.​ The 32 year old centre back officially ended almost a decade of service to Nigeria on Thursday, even though he was named in coach Eric Chelle’s provisional squad for next year’s AFCON.​ Troost Ekong said he felt it was the right moment to step aside and allow a younger generation of defenders to take over, noting that the team already has strong leaders who are ready to carry the mantle.​ He described his decision as part of a natural progression, adding that there is “an art in knowing when to step away”, even if part of him would have loved to lift the AFCON trophy and play at one more World Cup.​ The […]
