NAF airstrikes kill over 40 terrorists in Borno

The Nigerian Air Force has killed more than 40 terrorists in air operations at Azir and Musarram areas of Borno State. The strikes disrupted planned attacks and supported ongoing ground operations in the North-East. Spokesperson for the Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said in a statement on Sunday that the missions were carried out on January 15 and 16 by the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai. He explained that the operations followed actionable intelligence and close coordination with troops on the ground. Ejodame said aircraft were deployed to Azir in the early hours of January 16 after a distress report that troops were in contact with terrorists withdrawing from the area. Surveillance later showed the terrorists trying to regroup under nearby trees, leading to precise and repeated airstrikes that killed many of them. He added that a post-strike […]

Boko Haram has lasted longer than civil war Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says the Boko Haram insurgency has now lasted for about 15 years, making it longer than the Nigerian civil war. He described the prolonged conflict as a serious failure in addressing insecurity and development challenges in the country. Obasanjo spoke while comparing the three year civil war to the insurgency which began around 2009 and has continued despite several military operations. He said the situation shows that Nigeria has not tackled the root causes of extremism, including poverty, unemployment and poor governance. He also warned that long running conflicts weaken national unity and drain resources that should be used for education, health and infrastructure. Obasanjo called for a comprehensive approach that combines security action with dialogue, economic opportunities and community based solutions. The former president urged current leaders to learn from past mistakes and design policies […]

We’ll defeat terror, restore order and peace, say Defense Minister, NSA

Defence Minister General Christopher Musa and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu have assured Nigerians that the country will defeat terrorism and restore order and peace despite current security challenges. Speaking at separate security forums in Abuja, both officials described terrorists, bandits and other violent groups as “evil” and vowed that the government would not give up or surrender in the fight against them. Ribadu warned that any individual or group seeking to spread terror, exploit communities or undermine national unity would face decisive, coordinated and uncompromising action from security agencies. He stressed that lasting peace cannot be achieved by government alone, calling for a “whole of society” approach that involves traditional and religious leaders, civil society, youth and women’s groups, the private sector and international partners. The NSA said his office has directed the National Counter Terrorism Centre to intensify […]

African Union Chief Says ‘No Genocide’ in Nigeria’s Troubled North

African Union Commission chair Mahamoud Ali Youssouf has declared there is “no genocide in northern Nigeria,” refuting US President Donald Trump’s recent claims that Christians face mass slaughter at the hands of jihadists. Youssouf stated at a New York press conference that the “complexity of the situation in northern Nigeria should push us to think twice before making such statements.” Youssouf clarified that Boko Haram’s attacks have impacted both Muslim and Christian communities, with Muslims being “the first victims” of the insurgency. Nigeria, with a roughly equal Christian south and Muslim-majority north, experiences indiscriminate violence from jihadist groups, but not targeted Christian genocide. Since 2009, Boko Haram has killed more than 40,000 and displaced over two million, according to UN data. Youssouf stressed that mislabeling the crisis as genocide oversimplifies the grave security challenges facing Nigeria and risks misunderstanding the […]

Nigerian Leaders Reject US Senator’s Insurgency Sponsorship Claim

Former presidential aide Reno Omokri, alongside a US former mayor and a top Islamic leader, has strongly rejected US Senator Ted Cruz's allegation that the Nigerian government sponsors Boko Haram insurgency. At a press conference in Abuja, Omokri described the claim as "false, unfair, and lacking any credible evidence." He challenged Senator Cruz to provide proof and name any officials allegedly involved, stating that such accusations damage Nigeria's image and counterterrorism efforts. Former Republican Mayor of Blanco, Texas, Mike Arnold, emphasized that Christians and Muslims in Nigeria are united against a common enemy—terrorism. He expressed confidence that US President Donald Trump would be "very amenable" to providing assistance if formally requested by the Nigerian government. The Secretary-General of the Jama’at Nasril Islam (JNI) also condemned the allegations, warning that labeling the violence as a "Christian genocide" is baseless and dangerously […]
