Onion Farmers Urge Government to Regulate Imports
Onion farmers in Asante Akyem North are calling on the government to regulate the importation of foreign onions in order to protect local produce and ensure a stable market for Ghanaian farmers. They argue that onions brought in from Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Niger are undermining local sales, as traders and consumers often prefer the cheaper imports over homegrown produce. Farmers told Adom News that this year’s harvest has been particularly good, with a bumper yield capable of meeting national demand. They are urging authorities to introduce controls on imported onions, especially during the local harvest season, to safeguard their livelihoods.
