Landslides and Flash Floods Kill 47 in Nepal as Heavy Rains Cause Widespread Damage

Landslides and flash floods triggered by relentless monsoon rains have killed at least 47 people and caused widespread destruction across eastern and central Nepal, authorities said on Sunday. According to the Armed Police Force, thirty-five people died in separate landslides in Ilam district, which borders India. Spokesperson Kalidas Dhauboji confirmed that rescue teams were still searching for survivors amid heavy rainfall and unstable terrain. “Rescue efforts for the missing persons are going on,” said Shanti Mahat, spokesperson for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority. At least nine people have been reported missing after being swept away by floodwaters since Friday, while three others were killed by lightning strikes in different parts of the country.
