ICPC Chair Calls for Timelines in Corruption Trials
The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Musa Aliyu, has urged constitutional reforms that would set deadlines for the conclusion of corruption cases involving politicians and other high-profile individuals. Speaking on Inside Sources, a Channels Television programme, Aliyu stressed that corruption trials should not drag on indefinitely but be completed within fixed timelines, similar to election petitions. “If we don’t kill corruption, corruption will kill us,” Aliyu said. “Unfortunately, some corruption cases take 10 to 15 years to conclude. By then, even the ICPC chairman who initiated the case may have left office.” He noted that Nigeria may need special courts to handle corruption cases efficiently, pointing to other countries that have adopted such measures.
