Health Minister inaugurates boards of key health institutions, demands reform and accountability

The Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has inaugurated newly constituted boards of several key health institutions across the country and called for accountability, integrity, and measurable results in their operations. In a statement, Mr Akandoh stressed that the appointments were not ceremonial but rather a “solemn call to service” that required disciplined and results-oriented leadership. He said every board member would sign performance contracts with defined key performance indicators (KPIs) and would be expected to submit regular reports to his office. The boards inaugurated included that of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Tamale, Cape Coast, and Sunyani Teaching Hospitals, the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), and the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. Biomedical laboratory scientists call for reforms to enhance healthcare delivery

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has emphasised the critical role of biomedical laboratory scientists in promoting sustainability in clinical testing.  At the International Medical Laboratory Science Day celebration in Accra, President of GAMLS, Dr Eric Kofi Aidoo, highlighted the indispensable role of laboratory professionals in effective healthcare delivery. He underscored the critical need for a sustainable workforce and resilient infrastructure to achieve Ghana’s vision of becoming a health tourism hub. Dr Aidoo further appealed for realistic pricing and sustainable financing mechanisms, particularly advocating the decoupling of medical laboratory charges from bundled health services. Minority on Health Committee appeals to TTH doctors to return to work

The Minority Caucus on Health has expressed concern over the suspension of emergency and outpatient services at Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH). The strike action, which began on Thursday, April 24, 2025, is in protest of what the doctors describe as a hostile working environment, lack of basic medical supplies, and mistreatment by senior government officials. Patients who visited the hospital for care were left frustrated, as the consulting rooms were empty with no doctors present.
