Lawyer Rashid Ibrahim Elected 59th President of National Union of Ghana Students

Legal practitioner Rashid Ibrahim has been elected as the 59th President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) after a keenly contested election held during the 58th Annual NUGS Delegates Congress over the weekend. The peaceful and transparent election brought together delegates from universities, colleges, and pre-tertiary institutions across the country. According to the official results released by the NUGS Electoral Commission, Lawyer Rashid Ibrahim secured 360 votes to emerge victorious. He was followed by Agirapah Opoku with 321 votes, Alvin Adjei Othcere with 289 votes, Latif Lawrence Jorhowie with 260 votes, Asare Bediako with 146 votes, and Nazeer Saeed with 6 votes, out of a total of 1,382 valid ballots cast. GTEC orders UCC Vice-Chancellor to step aside

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), to step aside for exceeding the mandatory retirement age. In a statement issued on September 19, 2025, GTEC announced the appointment of Professor Denis Worlanyo Aheto as acting Vice-Chancellor. The Commission explained that Prof. Boampong, who remains in office despite being over 60, is in violation of Article 199(1) of the 1992 Constitution. “Article 199(1) states that a public officer shall, except as otherwise provided in this Constitution, retire from the public service on attaining the age of sixty years,” GTEC noted.
