379 Foreigners Arrested for Using Ghana Cards to Illegally Apply for Ghanaian Passports
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that 379 foreign nationals have been arrested after attempting to use Ghana Cards to fraudulently apply for Ghanaian passports. Their Ghana Cards have since been confiscated. Addressing a press conference, the Minister revealed that interviews with the suspects confirmed none of them were Ghanaian citizens. He emphasized the government’s firm stance against passport fraud and identity-related crimes. “Foreigners are trying to lay their hands on our passports. We need to be ahead of the threat,” Ablakwa warned. “We are rolling out a no-nonsense approach: any foreigner attempting to obtain a Ghanaian passport will be promptly apprehended and prosecuted.” The Minister linked the surge in such attempts to the growing value of the Ghanaian passport, which now grants visa-free access to 42 countries.
