Mahama urges media to speak for the people and hold leaders accountable on Press Freedom Day

President John Dramani Mahama has said Ghana’s democracy depends on a strong, responsible media that is not afraid to hold those in power to account and give the public a voice. In a statement posted on Facebook on Saturday, May 3, 2025, to mark World Press Freedom Day, Mr Mahama praised Ghanaian journalists for continuing to do their work in the face of growing pressure and challenges. “As President of the Republic, I join the people of Ghana in celebrating the role played by the Ghanaian media in stabilising our democracy,” he wrote. “From holding our leadership accountable to amplifying the voices of our citizens, your work is indispensable.” Mr Mahama said journalism grounded in truth, fairness, and ethics was not just good practice but necessary for national development. GJA to honour promoters of press freedom today

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) will honour 24 distinguished individuals and institutions for championing press freedom and the cause of the GJA over the years as it commemorates this year’s World Press Freedom Day (WPFD). The event, a marked departure from the annual daytime flag-raising ceremony at the Forecourt of the Ghana International Press Centre to commemorate WPFD, will be held this evening, at the Alisa Hotel, North Ridge, at 6 p.m, a statement issued by the association and signed by its General Secretary, Kofi Yeboah, said. “It is an innovation designed to use the occasion of WPFD to recognise and honour the recipients, with President John Dramani Mahama as the Special Guest of Honour, with Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Members of the Diplomatic Corps, media partners and media practitioners in attendance,” it added. GJA Sets March Deadline for Update on Ahmed Suale’s Murder Case.

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has given authorities until the end of March 2025 to provide a significant update on the unresolved murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale. At a press conference in Accra, GJA President Albert Kwabena Dwumfour expressed disappointment over the lack of progress six years after the assassination.Mr. Dwumfour criticized the police for their poor handling of the case and warned that if no satisfactory update is provided, the GJA will take the matter to the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice.
