Korle Bu Laboratory Workers Begin Strike, Full Shutdown Planned

Medical laboratory professionals at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have commenced a phased industrial action that could severely disrupt healthcare delivery at Ghana’s largest referral facility, with a complete shutdown of laboratory services expected next week. The Korle Bu chapter of the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) began a sit-down strike on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, significantly scaling down laboratory operations across the hospital. Phased Strike Already Disrupting Diagnostic Services The first phase of the industrial action, which runs until Sunday, February 8, has already restricted access to critical diagnostic services for thousands of patients. In a strike notice signed by Chapter Chairman John Kofi Nakoja, union members were directed to suspend all Outpatient Department (OPD) laboratory services during this period. Health Minister Defends Farming Background

Ghana’s Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has strongly dismissed criticisms suggesting that his farming background makes him unqualified to lead the Ministry of Health. The comments originated from Dr. David Tenkorang, General Secretary of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), who argued that the Minister lacked a deep understanding of hospital operations because “he is a farmer.” Addressing the matter at a press conference on Thursday, Mr. Akandoh described the remarks as misplaced and a needless distraction. He explained that effective leadership of the Health Ministry does not require a medical degree alone, but rather strategic leadership, policy implementation, and problem-solving capacity. “I have been reminded that I am a farmer. Yes, nobody needs to remind me. I am a proud farmer, and everybody knows it. Until my appointment, I was one of the largest rice farmers […]

Ghana Nurses Midwives Protest Over 8-Month Unpaid Salaries

A coalition of more than 7,000 nurses and midwives working in public health facilities across Ghana has staged a protest to demand the immediate release of eight months’ worth of unpaid salaries. The group, known as the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives, says they have not received any pay since January 2025, leaving many in severe financial distress. Despite being granted financial clearance by government—a process meant to authorize their salaries—no payments have been made to date. During the protest, the convener of the coalition, Stephen Kwadwo Takyiah, expressed the deep frustration and emotional toll the situation has caused. “We are emotionally drained from working with no assurances of payment anytime soon,” he lamented, describing the toll on both morale and daily survival. The health professionals argue that the salary delays have forced them into what they call an […]
