Dorcas Affo-Toffey Builds New Classroom Block for Jomoro School

More than 400 pupils and teachers at Nana Avoh Nwiah Basic School in the Jomoro Municipality had for years been forced to teach and learn in a deteriorating wooden structure widely described by residents as a death trap. The unsafe building discouraged attendance and affected enrolment, as some parents feared for their children’s safety. Inside, there were no proper desks. Pupils sat on backless benches placed on dusty, uncemented floors. When heavy rains fell, teachers often shut the school because of the leaking, tattered roof. On days it remained open, more than 400 pupils were squeezed into a single classroom considered slightly safer than the rest of the structure. The open design of the building created constant danger. Teachers recalled an incident where a snake fell from the roof into a classroom during lessons. The situation was worsened by poor […]

WAEC links sharp decline in 2025 WASSCE Core Mathematics results to student skill gaps

The Head of Public Relations at the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), John Kapi, says the steep drop in Core Mathematics performance in the 2025 WASSCE is linked to clear skill gaps among candidates. Speaking on the JOY Super Morning Show, he outlined seven areas where students struggled the most. These included representing mathematical information in diagrams, solving global math-related problems, constructing cumulative frequency tables, making deductions from real-life scenarios, solving simple interest questions, converting word problems into mathematical expressions, and interpreting results from cumulative frequency data. He noted that these topics are not outside the syllabus or the test blueprint. They simply exposed weaknesses in how students engage with the subject. WAEC’s provisional results show that more than half of the candidates—220,008 out of 461,736—failed Core Mathematics, marking the worst performance in seven years. The percentage of students earning […]

Government Allocates GH¢1 Billion to End Double-Track in Senior High Schools

The government has announced a GH¢1 billion allocation to phase out the double-track system in senior high schools across Ghana. The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, revealed this plan during the inauguration of a new staff accommodation facility at Accra Girls’ Senior High School. The investment, expected to feature in next year’s budget, will be sourced from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and directed toward addressing long-standing infrastructure deficits in the education sector. The double-track system was first introduced in the 2018/2019 academic year as a temporary solution to manage overcrowding in schools after the Free SHS policy significantly increased enrolment. Students were divided into two groups who alternated in cycles, making it possible to maximize existing facilities. While it provided a short-term fix, the system was never intended as a permanent feature. Haruna Iddrisu explained that the proposed investment […]
