Ghana Constitutional Review Committee Proposes Ban on MPs Becoming Ministers

The Constitutional Review Committee has proposed a significant amendment to Ghana’s 1992 Constitution that would prevent sitting Members of Parliament from being appointed as Ministers of State, Deputy Ministers, or Regional Ministers. Under the proposal, any Member of Parliament who resigns during a parliamentary term would also remain ineligible for ministerial or regional appointments until the end of that term. The restriction would apply only for the duration of the mandate for which the individual was elected. The recommendation was presented to President John Dramani Mahama at Jubilee House on Monday as part of the Committee’s final report. The Minority in Parliament says it has not yet decided whether to participate in the vetting of Acting Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, amid ongoing controversy over the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.
