Protests trail Herzog’s final day in Australia

Pro Palestine protesters gathered in central Melbourne on Thursday as Israeli President Isaac Herzog ended his four day visit to Australia. Similar demonstrations had already taken place in Canberra and in Sydney, where clashes with police led to arrests earlier in the week. Herzog travelled to Australia at the invitation of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese following the December 14 shooting at a Hanukkah event at Sydney’s Bondi Beach that killed 15 people. Critics accuse him of complicity in civilian deaths in Gaza and objected to the state visit while the war continues. Demonstrators in Melbourne’s central business district rallied outside Flinders Street Station, many wearing keffiyeh scarves and waving Palestinian flags. Police estimated that around 5,000 people were expected to join the protest. Protesters cited a United Nations Commission of Inquiry report that concluded Israel has committed genocide in Gaza […]

Netanyahu to urge Trump to widen Iran talks beyond nuclear issue

President Donald Trump will host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Wednesday, where Netanyahu is expected to push for broader US talks with Iran that go beyond its nuclear programme. He wants any agreement to also restrict Tehran’s ballistic missiles and its support for armed proxies such as Hamas and Hezbollah. This will be their seventh meeting since Trump returned to office just over a year ago, and it follows indirect US Iran talks in Oman last week. Trump has warned he could order strikes on Iran if there is no deal, while Tehran has vowed to retaliate, raising fears of a wider regional war. Trump told US media that a good agreement would mean no nuclear weapons and no missiles for Iran and said he is considering sending a second US aircraft carrier strike group […]

Israel starts demolishing UNRWA headquarters in Jerusalem

Israeli bulldozers have begun demolishing parts of the headquarters of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, in occupied east Jerusalem. The operation took place in the Sheikh Jarrah area, where an Israeli flag was seen flying over the compound. UNRWA spokesman Jonathan Fowler said Israeli forces entered the compound shortly after 7 a.m., removed security guards and then allowed bulldozers to move in and start tearing down buildings. He called it an unprecedented attack on the agency and a serious breach of international law and UN privileges and immunities. Fowler warned that what is happening to UNRWA today could happen to any other international organisation or diplomatic mission if such actions go unchallenged. Photos from the scene showed heavy machinery at work and extensive damage inside the compound. Israel’s far right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir briefly visited […]

Pope Leo vows not to be ‘bystander’ to human rights abuses

Pope Leo XIV has declared that he will not allow the Holy See to be a “silent bystander” in the face of human rights abuses and grave injustices around the world. Speaking to a group of new ambassadors to the Vatican, the pontiff said the Church cannot stand aside while people suffer from violent conflicts, political repression, deep inequality and violations of fundamental human dignity. He stressed that the Holy See will continue to raise its voice on issues such as wars, persecution, poverty and attacks on the rule of law, insisting that peace requires concrete action whenever human dignity is threatened. Pope Leo’s comments are seen as part of a broader stance he has taken since his election, which includes strong appeals for a ceasefire in Gaza, condemnation of abuses of power and a call for zero tolerance toward […]

Israeli Army Kills Two West Bank Teens After Firebomb Incident

Israeli soldiers killed two Palestinian teenagers overnight in the West Bank village of Judeira. The Israeli army said the two boys, both aged 16, were seen throwing Molotov cocktails at a road used by Israeli civilians north of Jerusalem. The military said that soldiers in the area responded by shooting and killing the suspects. The Palestinian health ministry named the teenagers as Mohammed Ateem and Mohammed Qasim. The ministry said their bodies were retrieved by the Israeli army. Footage released by the military showed two people throwing a burning object over a wall near the village. Judeira is located in the West Bank, which has been under Israeli control since 1967 and is surrounded by Israeli-built roads. Earlier in the week, another Palestinian teenager was killed by Israeli forces after allegedly throwing an explosive device at Israeli troops. The Israeli […]

Islamic States, European Powers Rally Behind Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan

A coalition of Muslim-majority nations and European powers on Monday backed a plan by US President Donald Trump aimed at ending the war in Gaza — a proposal that has already drawn criticism from some Palestinians as a “farce.” The joint statement of support came from Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Turkey, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, and Pakistan. The countries said they welcomed Trump’s “sincere efforts” and pledged readiness to work with the United States and other parties to secure implementation. The backing marks a rare moment of alignment, with Saudi Arabia’s stance seen as especially significant as it considers normalisation with Israel — a priority for both Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who endorsed the plan and warned Hamas of more devastation if it refused. European allies also lined up behind Trump’s proposal. French President Emmanuel […]

Netanyahu, Western Leaders Clash as UK, Canada, Australia Recognise State of Palestine

The governments of the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia yesterday formally recognised the State of Palestine, escalating diplomatic tensions with Israel as war rages in Gaza. Portugal is expected to follow suit. The coordinated announcement came after months of warnings that recognition would follow if Israel failed to commit to a peace process that allowed for a two-state solution. Starmer: “A Step Toward Peace” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer defended the decision, saying it was necessary to preserve the hope of peace amid Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. “In the face of the growing horror in the Middle East, we are acting to keep alive the possibility of peace and a two-state solution,” Starmer said in a post on X. He stressed that recognition “is not a reward for Hamas,” adding that the group “can have no role in government, no role […]

Hamas warns Gaza hostages could share fate of missing Israeli pilot

Hamas’ armed wing on Saturday published “farewell” photographs of most of the remaining hostages in Gaza, warning that Israel’s expanding ground assault on Gaza City could endanger their lives. The group invoked the case of Ron Arad, an Israeli air force navigator missing since 1986 after being shot down over Lebanon, whose fate remains unresolved decades later. Hostages at risk Of the 251 people seized during Hamas’ October 2023 attack on Israel, 47 remain in Gaza, including 25 whom the Israeli military has declared dead. “Due to (Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu’s obstinacy and (military chief Eyal) Zamir’s submission… a farewell photograph taken at the start of the operation in Gaza City,” the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades wrote on Telegram alongside the images. The militants released 46 photographs of hostages, each labelled with the name “Ron Arad,” a symbolic warning of possible […]

UN investigators accuse Israel of ‘genocide’ in Gaza war

The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry (COI) has accused Israel of committing “genocide” in Gaza, alleging that the military campaign was aimed at “destroying the Palestinians.” Commission chief Navi Pillay, a former UN human rights chief and judge, told AFP that “genocide is occurring in Gaza and is continuing to occur,” stressing that “the responsibility lies with the State of Israel.” The COI’s latest report, released Tuesday, said Israeli authorities and forces have since October 2023 carried out four of the five genocidal acts listed under the 1948 Genocide Convention, including: Killing members of the group Inflicting serious bodily and mental harm Imposing life conditions calculated to bring about destruction Measures intended to prevent births The report directly named Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, and former defence minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of incitement to genocide […]

Israeli Strike in Qatar Threatens Gaza Ceasefire Talks — UN

The United Nations has warned that Israel’s strike in Doha, Qatar, has opened a dangerous new chapter in the Gaza conflict, with serious implications for regional stability and ongoing ceasefire negotiations. Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, told the Security Council on Thursday that the world was “shocked” by the attack, which reportedly targeted individuals gathered to discuss the latest U.S.-backed proposal for a ceasefire and hostage release deal in Gaza. “The sovereignty and territorial integrity of any country, including Qatar — a valued partner in advancing peacemaking and conflict resolution — must be respected,” DiCarlo said. She stressed that Qatar, alongside Egypt and the United States, had been playing a pivotal role in brokering a truce, adding: “We are deeply grateful for Qatar’s steadfast commitment and constructive diplomacy. All parties must act to preserve these efforts.” […]
