Total Faces War Crimes Claims Over Mozambique Massacre
French energy company TotalEnergies is facing accusations of complicity in war crimes related to a 2021 massacre near its gas project in northern Mozambique. A human rights group has filed a complaint in France, alleging Total enabled or supported actions by local security forces who tortured and killed dozens of civilians at its facility. The events happened in Cabo Delgado, a region troubled by violent Islamist militants. In March 2021, after insurgents attacked the town of Palma near Total’s gas plant, Mozambican soldiers reportedly detained and executed civilians in shipping containers at the site. Some victims were accused of helping the militants, but the actual number killed remains unclear. One investigative journalist estimates at least 97 deaths, possibly more.
