UEW Chancellor demands stronger action against illegal mining after Ayensu River pollution

The Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Neenyi Ghartey VII, has renewed his call for stronger action against illegal miners whose activities have heavily polluted the Ayensu River, the main water source for the Agona Kwanyarko treatment plant. The pollution has triggered water shortages across several parts of the Central Region. Neenyi Ghartey VII made the appeal during UEW’s 30th Graduation Ceremony, where 8,288 students graduated across diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programmes. He said the once-clear Ayensu River—used for drinking, cooking, and irrigation—has turned “milky, toxic, and contaminated with mercury and cyanide” because of ongoing illegal mining. He also condemned recent attacks on security personnel by illegal miners, calling the trend alarming and unacceptable. The Chancellor urged the government to equip the National Anti-Illegal Mining Taskforce (NAIMOS) with modern tools and technology to strengthen the national fight against […]

Coalition Against Galamsey Condemns Attack on Anti-Mining Officers in Asutifi North

The Coalition Against Galamsey, Ghana, has strongly condemned the violent attack on members of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Squad (NAIMOS) and other security personnel during a recent enforcement operation in the Asutifi North District. In an official statement, the Coalition described the assault — reportedly involving a sitting Member of Parliament accused of inciting residents to confront state officials — as a “grave affront to national security, democratic governance, and the rule of law.” The group warned that illegal mining (galamsey) continues to destroy rivers, forests, and farming lands, posing a direct threat to Ghana’s environment, economy, and public health. It added that any attack on enforcement officers is an attack on the state and the future of its citizens. The Coalition called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to reaffirm his zero-tolerance policy against political interference in the […]

NAIMOS Arrests Three Chinese Nationals in Hiawa Koofrom Illegal Mining Operation

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has intensified its nationwide crackdown on illegal mining, achieving another major success during an intelligence-led operation at Hiawa Koofrom in the Amenfi Central District of Ghana’s Western Region. The operation, conducted after credible intelligence was received from an informant, led to the arrest of three Chinese galamsey operators, the seizure of a pump action shotgun with four cartridges, and the impounding of two excavators used in destructive mining along the Ankobrah River. According to NAIMOS, the taskforce departed for the site around 0910 hours after receiving GPS coordinates pinpointing the illegal mining activity. On arrival, the team encountered both Chinese and Ghanaian illegal miners, many of whom fled into the forest after being alerted by local Okada riders. However, three Chinese suspects were successfully apprehended. A Nissan Navara vehicle, several mobile phones, and […]

He made the declaration at the closing ceremony of a week-long intensive training programme for personnel of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in Sunyani. The Minister commended the task force for its achievements since its establishment in June, including the arrest of more than 1,000 illegal miners, the repossession of nine restricted forest reserves, and the confiscation of over 900 water pumps, later reassigned to the Ministry of Agriculture for irrigation purposes. “These are not mere statistics. They are victories; victories for our land, for our water, and for our people,” he said. Mr. Buah stressed […]

Ghana miners launch taskforce to fight illegal mining

The National Concerned Small-Scale Miners Association, Ghana (NCSSMAG), has inaugurated an Anti-Galamsey Taskforce to intensify the fight against illegal mining on rivers and streams nationwide. The taskforce is mandated to monitor members’ operations, enforce compliance, and promote responsible mining practices. It will also conduct peer reviews to ensure accountability and adherence to industry standards. To enhance operations, NCSSMAG has deployed taskforces across major mining areas and procured a mini speedboat to patrol water bodies. The initiative supports the government’s Blue Water Guards program under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which aims to safeguard Ghana’s rivers from destructive mining practices. At the launch, NCSSMAG President Michael Kwadwo Peprah issued a strong warning to illegal miners. “Our message is clear: all illegal mining operations on water bodies must cease immediately. The taskforce will not compromise in protecting our rivers for […]

MOFA distributes 900 seized pumps to farmers

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA) has distributed 900 water pumping machines, previously seized from illegal mining (galamsey) sites, to nine regions across Ghana. The initiative is part of efforts to boost agricultural productivity under the government’s Feed Ghana Programme. At a ceremony held in Amrahia, Accra, the Minister of Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, officially handed over the machines to regional ministers from the Upper East, Upper West, North East, Savannah, Northern, Greater Accra, Volta, Oti, and Bono East Regions. Each region will receive 100 machines, which will then be allocated to farmer cooperatives for use in irrigation and crop production. Mr. Opoku explained that the court ordered the confiscated machines to be given to MOFA to support food production. He added that the beneficiary regions were deliberately selected because galamsey activities are not prevalent there. “We wanted […]

Onion Farmers Urge Government to Regulate Imports

Onion farmers in Asante Akyem North are calling on the government to regulate the importation of foreign onions in order to protect local produce and ensure a stable market for Ghanaian farmers. They argue that onions brought in from Burkina Faso, Nigeria, and Niger are undermining local sales, as traders and consumers often prefer the cheaper imports over homegrown produce. Farmers told Adom News that this year’s harvest has been particularly good, with a bumper yield capable of meeting national demand. They are urging authorities to introduce controls on imported onions, especially during the local harvest season, to safeguard their livelihoods. Moro Adamu, chairman of the Asante Akyem North Onion Farmers Association, appealed for government intervention through policies that would not only protect the onion industry but also encourage youth to embrace agriculture. He added that such support could help […]

Forestry Commission Boosts Training to Fight Illegal Mining

The Forestry Commission is taking steps to address the shortage of frontline technical staff, which has hampered efforts in combating illegal mining and forest degradation across the country. In recent years, the Commission has struggled with a lack of technical expertise in natural resource management, undermining its ability to protect forest reserves effectively. Acting CEO of the Commission, Dr. Hugh Brown, said technical experts are critical in coordinating protection efforts. “We have rapid response teams and forest guards. The rapid response team is led by the technical staff, so they will coordinate efforts to protect our forest reserves,” he noted. He added that with the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) initiative, trained officers would also support the Timber Industry Division. Speaking at the 2nd Matriculation Ceremony of the Forestry Commission Training Centre, Dr. Brown highlighted the importance of […]

Ghana to Implement Excavator Import Permit System to Curb Illegal Mining

In a significant policy shift, President John Dramani Mahama has announced that Ghana will introduce a permit system for the importation of excavators. This move is part of broader efforts to combat illegal mining activities, commonly known as 'galamsey', which have led to widespread environmental degradation across the country. The Rationale Behind the Permit System Speaking at the Mining in Motion Conference in Accra, President Mahama highlighted the alarming proliferation of excavators in Ghana, stating that the country currently possesses more excavators than the rest of Africa combined. He emphasized that this unchecked influx of heavy machinery has been a major contributor to the escalating illegal mining crisis. The new policy, dubbed "No Permit, No Excavator," mandates that all excavator imports must be accompanied by an official permit. This measure aims to ensure that only authorized entities engage in mining […]
