Minister pushes for launch of Nigeria–Israel joint commission

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, has called for the full take off of the Nigeria–Israel Joint Commission to deepen cooperation between both countries. She made the appeal while hosting the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, at Tafawa Balewa House in Abuja.​ According to a statement by her media aide, Dr Magnus Eze, their talks covered defence and intelligence, economic ties, consular matters, religious tourism and wider bilateral and multilateral issues. Odumegwu Ojukwu said Nigeria has much to learn from Israel’s experience in border security management, especially in the fight against insurgency and terrorism. Senate clears 64 ambassadorial nominees, leaves one pending​

The Senate has confirmed 64 out of 65 nominees for appointment as Career and Non Career Ambassadors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The confirmation followed consideration and adoption of the report of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs presented by its chairman, Senator Abubakar Sani Bello.​ Senator Bello said the committee screened all the nominees and found them suitable for appointment. He added that the process complied with relevant laws and guidelines governing diplomatic postings. According to the report, 34 nominees were confirmed as Career Ambassadors while 30 were cleared as Non Career Ambassadors.​ Those confirmed as Career Ambassadors include Nwaobiala Ezenwa Chukwuemeka from Abia, Betso Maimunah Ibrahim from Adamawa and Monica Okwuchukwu Enebechi from Anambra. Tinubu names Ibas, Dambazau, Gambari as ambassador nominees

President Bola Tinubu has nominated former Chief of Naval Staff Ibok-Ete Ibas, ex Chief of Army Staff Abdulrahman Dambazau and former Chief of Defence Staff Lucky Irabor’s successor, Leo Irabor’s predecessor, General Martin Luther Agwai Gambari, as non-career ambassadors for Nigeria.​ The president transmitted the list of nominees to the Senate in a letter read during Thursday’s plenary, asking the upper chamber to screen and confirm them for appointment as ambassadors extraordinary and plenipotentiary.​ Tinubu said the nominations were made in line with constitutional powers and the need to further strengthen Nigeria’s representation and diplomatic engagement with strategic partner countries around the world.​ The Senate has referred the names to its Committee on Foreign Affairs, which is expected to conduct screening and report back to the full chamber for consideration and possible confirmation.​
