U.S. Invests Over 10 Million Ghana Cedis to Boost Fonio Production in Northern Ghana.
The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), is investing $742,000 (equivalent to over 10.8 million Ghana Cedis) to support sustainable fonio production in northern Ghana. This initiative aims to enhance food security and improve the livelihoods of farmers in the region. The funding will help AMAATI, a Ghanaian social enterprise, expand its fonio processing capacity at its factory in Tamale, increasing output from three to ten metric tonnes daily. Fonio, a drought-resistant, gluten-free grain rich in nutrients, is a vital crop in the region. It regenerates degraded soil and offers significant health benefits.
