 Niger State Warns Residents of Flood Risk from Dam Release

The Niger State Government has issued an urgent warning to residents living near the River Niger and River Kaduna to relocate to safer ground. This is due to the controlled release of water from four major hydroelectric dams: Kainji, Shiroro, Zungeru, and Jebba. The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) stated that the dams are releasing thousands of gallons of water per minute. This will likely cause the rivers to overflow and flood surrounding communities. The Director-General of NSEMA, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, confirmed that flooding has already begun in 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs), damaging houses, farmlands, and roads. FG warns of fresh flooding in Lagos, Adamawa, 12 other states

The Federal Government has issued a fresh warning of possible flooding in Lagos, Adamawa, and 12 other states, urging residents in high-risk communities to take precautionary measures. In a flood prediction bulletin released on Tuesday by the National Flood Early Warning Centre of the Federal Ministry of Environment, heavy rainfall is expected between September 16 and 18 across 14 states and 52 communities.
