25 dead, 14 missing in Yobe boat mishap

No fewer than 25 persons have died, while 14 others are still missing, after a boat capsized along the Yobe River in Garbi town, Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State.​Authorities say the wooden canoe was carrying more than 50 passengers when it overturned on Saturday night, leaving only a handful of survivors pulled from the water by local divers and emergency responders.​ According to preliminary reports, the passengers were returning from Adiyani town in neighbouring Jigawa State, where many had been engaged in fishing, farming and petty trading, when the incident occurred mid journey.​As of the latest updates, 25 bodies have been recovered and about 13 people rescued alive, while search and rescue operations continue for the 14 still unaccounted for.​ The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the tragedy and said teams from Nguru and surrounding areas are […]

GAWU Launches Initiative to Combat Child Labour in Volta Fishing Communities.

The General Agriculture Workers Union (GAWU) is taking significant steps to combat child labour in Ghana’s fishing communities, particularly around Volta Lake. In collaboration with the Danish Trade Union Development Agency (DTDA), GAWU visited the North Dayi district and Kpando municipality, raising awareness about the importance of prioritizing education for children over labour.During the visit, a Community Child Protection Committee (CCPC) was established to monitor and report instances of child labour. District Chief Executive Kudjo Atta emphasized the need for accurate reporting and urged community members to differentiate between legitimate help and exploitation.GAWU’s General Secretary, Andrews Addoquaye Taggoe, encouraged parents to keep their children in school, highlighting that education is essential for achieving future aspirations.
