IGP declares banks national security asset orders cyber fraud clampdown

Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has declared Nigeria’s banking sector a strategic national security asset and ordered an intelligence led crackdown on cybercriminals, insider collaborators and cross border financial crime syndicates targeting banks.​ Speaking at a meeting with the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria and bank chief executives in Lagos, he said the police are shifting from reactive responses to proactive disruption of organised crime against financial institutions. France probes ex-minister Jack Lang over Epstein links

French financial crime prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into former Culture Minister Jack Lang over his alleged financial links to Jeffrey Epstein, judicial sources confirmed. EFCC returns N96.5m to Enugu Ponzi scheme victims

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has returned N96.5 million to victims of a Ponzi investment scheme in Enugu State.​ The refund was made through the EFCC’s Enugu zonal command, which said the recovered funds represented part of the money traced to bank accounts linked to the fraudulent scheme’s operators.​ According to the commission, dozens of victims had lodged complaints after being lured with promises of high, quick returns on investments that later collapsed without repayment.​ EFCC officials said efforts were ongoing to track more assets, prosecute those behind the scam and recover additional funds so that more victims can receive refunds.​ The agency advised Nigerians to be wary of any platform offering unrealistic profits, warning that many such schemes are disguised Ponzi operations designed to defraud unsuspecting investors.

Woman Jailed for GH₵81K Bank Fraud with Cloned Cheques..

A 35-year-old caterer and hairdresser, Jessica Oforiwaa, has been sentenced to five years in prison for stealing GH₵81,060 from GCB Bank customers using cloned cheques. The court emphasized the need for banks to enhance ICT systems and staff vigilance to prevent such crimes.Oforiwaa was convicted on multiple charges, including abetment of crime and theft, after conspiring with accomplices—some of whom remain at large. The stolen funds were withdrawn from accounts of victims using altered cheques issued under Oforiwaa’s business, Jesnat Cook Company.
