Trump Brands Muslim Brotherhood Terrorist Groups

US President Donald Trump has issued an executive order designating specific chapters of the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon as foreign terrorist organisations. The order mandates the Secretary of State and Treasury Secretary to implement broad sanctions, including asset freezes and travel bans, within 45 days. The administration alleges that the targeted Muslim Brotherhood affiliates supported Hamas and Hezbollah during the conflict in Gaza, accusing them of supplying aid and participating in joint operations. Trump asserted that these measures are intended to dismantle the financial and operational networks fueling global terror. The move also comes amid a renewed White House crackdown on extremist groups in Africa. Trump recently warned Nigeria of possible cuts to US assistance and even military action if attacks by Boko Haram and ISWAP are not addressed—a claim Nigeria’s government strongly rejects, stating that […]

EU Launches Reality Show to Combat Youth Extremism in Northwest Nigeria

The European Union (EU) and Search for Common Ground have launched a new reality show in Northwest Nigeria to address youth vulnerability to violent extremism. The initiative, highlighted at an Abuja event, focuses on empowering young people in Katsina, Zamfara, and Sokoto by improving economic opportunities, conflict-resolution skills, and social inclusion. EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot described the project as “a timely intervention” that puts youths at the center of shaping peaceful communities. The programme is based on youth-led research and aims to provide mentorship, entrepreneurship training, and peacebuilding skills. At least 50% of participants will be women, and people with disabilities and both rural and urban participants will be included. A unique aspect is ‘The Hustle Reality Show,’ which will train youths in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and community leadership through televised and digital content in English and Hausa. Participants will […]

Russia Finds Deceased LGBTQ Travel Agent Guilty of Extremism

A Moscow court has found 48-year-old LGBTQ travel agent Andrei Kotov guilty of extremism—one year after he died by suicide in jail. Kotov, head of Men Travel, was detained in November 2024, alleging he was beaten by police and later charged with extremism and using underage people for pornography. Rights groups say the case was a “show trial” designed to intimidate and silence the LGBTQ community. Russia’s crackdown on LGBTQ individuals has intensified since the Ukraine war, with President Vladimir Putin promoting “traditional family values” and labelling anything contrary as foreign-influenced. The Supreme Court banned the “international LGBT movement” as extremist in 2023, paving the way for arbitrary prosecution of LGBTQ people and their allies. The posthumous conviction comes despite Kotov’s death in pre-trial detention, raising concerns of judicial excess and deepening Russia’s human rights crisis. Activists warn the atmosphere […]
