Police Evacuate Expatriates After Thugs Disrupt MOWAA Exhibition in Benin
Chaos erupted at the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA) in Benin as a private exhibition for investors, artists, and international guests was disrupted by a group of thugs, who identified themselves as “sons and daughters of the Benin Kingdom.” The protesters, claiming to protect Benin’s cultural heritage, chanted slogans but insisted their actions were peaceful. Edo State Police Command intervened, restoring order and safely evacuating expatriates and guests to nearby hotels. Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, clarified that the evacuation was not a forceful eviction and followed intelligence reports of a planned protest. Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, helped address and de-escalate the tense situation. Efforts to reach MOWAA officials for comment were unsuccessful.
