Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of military aggression and backing rebels

Ethiopia’s foreign minister has accused neighbouring Eritrea of military aggression and interference, alleging that Eritrean forces are occupying Ethiopian territory and backing armed groups operating inside the country. The accusations mark a sharp escalation in tensions between the two Horn of Africa neighbours, whose relationship has deteriorated since the end of Ethiopia’s war in the northern Tigray region. Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a devastating border war between 1998 and 2000 before signing a landmark peace agreement in 2018. They later became allies during Ethiopia’s two-year conflict with Tigray authorities. However, Eritrea was not a signatory to the 2022 peace deal that ended the Tigray war, and relations have steadily worsened since then. In a letter dated Saturday, February 7, Ethiopian Foreign Minister Gedion Timothewos told his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh Mohammed that Eritrean troops had been stationed inside Ethiopian territory […]

Hayli Gubbi Volcano Erupts in Ethiopia After 10,000 Years

A volcano in Ethiopia has erupted for the first known time in more than 10,000 years, sending massive columns of smoke and ash into the sky and disrupting air travel as far away as India. The Hayli Gubbi volcano, located in the Afar region in Ethiopia’s northeast, came alive on Sunday after millennia of inactivity. The eruption blanketed nearby villages in thick dust and created new challenges for farmers and livestock herders in the area. Local administrator Mohammed Seid told the Associated Press that no casualties have been reported, but the ashfall threatens grazing lands essential for the community’s survival. Residents recalled the moment the eruption began, describing a sudden, explosive shock. “It felt like a bomb had gone off with smoke and ash,” said Ahmed Abdela, a resident of the area. NASA satellite images captured the plume rising dramatically […]

Dozens of Nigerians remain imprisoned in Ethiopia due to a stalled repatriation agreement, with the Nigerian government blaming Ethiopian authorities for the delay. The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, confirmed that Nigeria has "fulfilled its own side of the formalities," and the holdup is from "the Ethiopian side." Reports from 2023 indicated over 270 Nigerians were in Ethiopian prisons, mostly for drug offences. Advocacy groups are raising alarms about the "deplorable" conditions, alleging inadequate food, medical neglect, and brutal treatment. Ambassador Onwuka Collins of the My Dreamalive Development Foundation stated that some inmates have already died from illness and the harsh conditions, urging for […]

Ethiopian doctors face arrests during strike over pay and conditions

In mid-May, at a hospital in Ethiopia’s capital Addis Ababa, two police officers stormed the emergency ward where Dr. Tewodros* was on duty. Days earlier, he had joined a nationwide strike by public health workers protesting poor pay and harsh working conditions. The government had declared the strike illegal, setting the stage for confrontations between authorities and medical professionals. The officers told him they were taking him in for questioning without explanation. His colleagues tried to intervene, but the police dragged him out and held him at a nearby station for over three weeks. “That was the moment I felt helpless. That was the moment I was ashamed of my country,” he told Al Jazeera. He described being crammed into a cell with 15 others, denied contact with his family and even basic hygiene. Rights groups say his case was […]
