Government Allocates GH¢1 Billion to End Double-Track in Senior High Schools

The government has announced a GH¢1 billion allocation to phase out the double-track system in senior high schools across Ghana. The Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, revealed this plan during the inauguration of a new staff accommodation facility at Accra Girls’ Senior High School. The investment, expected to feature in next year’s budget, will be sourced from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund) and directed toward addressing long-standing infrastructure deficits in the education sector. The double-track system was first introduced in the 2018/2019 academic year as a temporary solution to manage overcrowding in schools after the Free SHS policy significantly increased enrolment. 99 SHSs to Shift to Single-Track Calendar in October

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that 99 Senior High Schools (SHSs) will move from the double-track system to a single-track calendar beginning October 31, 2025, with the start of the 2025/2026 academic year. In a statement signed by its Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, the Service explained that the adjustment is meant to create a more consistent academic schedule, improve teaching and learning, and reduce pressure on students. The GES noted that single-track schools will also benefit from improved planning of extracurricular activities, such as clubs, sports, and cultural programmes, while providing parents with a more predictable school timetable. Ghana’s double-track system in senior high schools is set to be scrapped by 2027, according to the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu.
