Thailand and Cambodia trade fire in deadly border clashes
Thailand and Cambodia have exchanged fire in deadly clashes along their shared border leaving several people dead and many others displaced. Fighting broke out in early December around disputed frontier areas leading to artillery and small arms exchanges between the two sides. Authorities in both countries accused each other of firing first and violating territorial integrity. The clashes damaged homes and forced civilians in nearby villages to flee to safer areas as tensions rose. Thailand said its forces responded to Cambodian fire aimed at Thai positions and civilian communities. Cambodia countered that its troops were defending their territory from Thai incursions and shelling.
