Petrol Price Nears ₦1,000/Litre as Marketers Plan Imports

The price of petrol is approaching ₦1,000 per litre in major Nigerian cities, prompting petroleum marketers to initiate plans for independent importation to stabilize the market. Marketers have blamed the price surge on supply constraints and production issues at the Dangote Refinery, which led private depot owners to significantly increase their ex-depot prices. This has forced retailers, including the NNPC, to adjust pump prices upwards. The National Publicity Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) confirmed that members of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association (DAPPMAN) are finalizing arrangements to import petrol. He stated that increased competition from these imports is expected to drive prices down in the coming weeks. Analysts warn that the soaring fuel cost threatens to trigger a fresh wave of price shocks across transportation, food, and manufacturing sectors.

LPG Retailers Not to Blame for Gas Price Hike, Says LPGAR

The Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers Association of Nigeria (LPGAR) has said that gas retailers are not responsible for the current increase in the price and scarcity of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), also known as cooking gas. In a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos, the Chairman of LPGAR under the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Mr. Ayobami Olarinoye, said the rising cost of LPG is caused by supply challenges, not manipulation by retailers. “The recent scarcity and price spike have brought hardship to many Nigerian homes and businesses. We understand this pain, but retailers should not be blamed,” Olarinoye said. His statement followed claims by the president of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), who accused retailers of contributing to the price surge. Olarinoye described the allegation as “unfair and misleading,” explaining that […]

PENGASSAN Fires Back at VP Shettima Over Dangote Dispute

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) has responded to Vice President Kashim Shettima's criticism of its recent strike, asserting it would take the same action again to protect its members. The dispute began when PENGASSAN launched a strike last week, alleging Dangote Refinery sacked 800 workers for joining the union. The strike was suspended after government intervention, but Vice President Shettima, speaking at an economic summit, condemned the action. He described Aliko Dangote as an "institution" and stated that "Nigeria is greater than PENGASSAN," warning against holding the nation "to ransom." In a sharp rebuttal, PENGASSAN President Festus Osifo stated, "Of course the nation is bigger than PENGASSAN, the way it’s bigger than Dangote and the Presidency." He affirmed that the union has a mandate to protect its members' jobs and would deploy the same strike action […]

NUPENG Brands Oshiomhole ‘Judas Iscariot’ of Workers

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has launched a scathing attack on Senator Adams Oshiomhole, calling him the "Judas Iscariot of Nigerian trade unionism." The union's strong condemnation follows Oshiomhole's comments criticizing a strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association (PENGASSAN) at the Dangote Refinery. NUPENG accused the former labour leader of betraying the working class and defending "corporate oppression." In a lengthy statement, NUPENG asserted that Oshiomhole's stance against the workers' right to unionize is a "reprehensible attack" on fundamental rights and a distortion of labour laws. They challenged him to point to any law that supports his views. As a result of his comments, NUPENG has declared Senator Oshiomhole persona non grata, meaning they will no longer engage with him or attend events where he is featured. The union has pledged its […]

Dangote to Redeploy Disengaged Workers, Says FG

The Federal Government has announced that staff disengaged from the Dangote Refinery will be redeployed across other companies within the Dangote Group, with no loss of pay. Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Mohammed Maigari Dingyadi, confirmed the resolution in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja following conciliation meetings between the company and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). “After examining the procedure used in the disengagement of workers, the meeting agreed that the management of Dangote Group shall immediately begin the process of redeploying the disengaged staff to other companies within the Dangote Group, with no loss of pay,” Dingyadi said. He stressed that no worker would be victimised for their role in the dispute, adding that both parties reached the compromise in good faith. The minister also reaffirmed workers’ right to unionise, noting […]

Court Restrains PENGASSAN From Cutting Gas Supply to Dangote Refinery Amid Nationwide Strike Threat

The National Industrial Court, Abuja, has restrained the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) from cutting crude and gas supply to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE. The interim order, delivered by Justice Emmanuel Subilim, followed an ex-parte application filed by the refinery’s lawyers, led by Ogwu Onoja (SAN). The court barred PENGASSAN, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) from halting supply or embarking on any action that could cripple refinery operations. Justice Subilim ruled that the balance of convenience was in favor of Dangote Refinery, warning that the planned strike would “irreparably damage” its operations and disrupt essential services to the Nigerian public. The matter was adjourned to October 13, with the interim order valid for […]

Ndume Urges Tinubu to Act Like a Dictator to End PENGASSAN–Dangote Refinery Dispute

Senator Ali Ndume has urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action — even if it means acting like a dictator — to resolve the escalating standoff between the Dangote Refinery and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN). Ndume, who represents Borno South, made the call on Monday during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time. “The best thing is for the president to sign an executive order calling them off. He has the right to dissolve them. In this case, I don’t mind if he acts like a dictator because some situations require very drastic measures,” he said. The crisis began after PENGASSAN accused the Dangote Refinery of unlawfully sacking 800 workers for joining the union. On Saturday, the association directed its members nationwide to down tools, calling the move a violation of Nigeria’s […]

JUST IN: Dangote Refinery denies mass sack, says workforce shake-up targets sabotage

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has confirmed a sweeping reorganisation of its operations and workforce, but denied reports of a mass sack of workers. In a letter dated September 24, 2025, signed by Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management Femi Adekunle, the refinery said the move was triggered by “many recent cases of reported sabotage in different units of the Petroleum Refinery leading to major safety concerns.” The 650,000 barrels per day facility, which began production in 2024, directed affected staff to hand over company property to their line managers and await clearance for entitlements to be computed by the Finance Department. A senior official of the refinery, however, dismissed media reports of an en masse dismissal, insisting the exercise was a reorganisation to curb sabotage and plug leakages within the plant. “Yes, the letter is correct. But […]

Nigeria supplies 67.6m barrels of crude to local refineries

The Federal Government says 67,657,559 barrels of crude oil were supplied to Nigerian refineries between January and August 2025. The Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) confirmed the figure, noting that deliveries went to both modular and state-owned refineries such as Waltersmith, Aradel Energy, and Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) facilities. Eniola Akinkuotu, Head of Media and Strategic Communications at NUPRC, explained that the supplies were made under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 and the Domestic Crude Supply Obligation (DCSO) policy, which requires producers to reserve a portion of crude for local processors before export. Despite this allocation, refiners received far less than they requested. Industry data shows local plants demanded 123.5 million barrels for the first half of 2025, but only 67.6 million barrels were delivered over eight months—about 45% less than required. Earlier projections suggested that […]

Crude Oil Imports Hit Record High as Dangote Refinery Reshapes Nigeria’s Trade Flow

Nigeria’s crude oil imports surged by 26.5% in the first half of 2025, reaching 5,665,602 metric tons, compared to 4,478,413 metric tons in the same period of 2024, according to fresh data from the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). The rise has been largely attributed to the 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Petroleum Refinery, which has been sourcing crude oil from countries including the United States, Brazil, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea. Financial Vanguard’s quarterly analysis shows a mixed trend: Q1 2025: Imports dropped to 2,400,553 MT, down 30% from Q1 2024 (3,037,209 MT). Q2 2025: Imports spiked to 3,265,099 MT, a 126% increase compared to Q2 2024 (1,441,204 MT). The Dangote Refinery, which began refining diesel and aviation fuel in January 2024, has since become a key player in both domestic and global energy trade, exporting petroleum products while importing crude […]
