DSS Frees Three Men Wrongly Held Over Banditry Allegations

The Department of State Services has released three men earlier arrested on suspicion of involvement in banditry and kidnapping after a fresh review showed they were wrongly detained. The men were picked up in June 2025 as part of wider security operations targeting banditry networks in the country. A special review panel set up by the DSS examined their case and concluded that investigations did not establish any link between the suspects and the alleged crimes. Following this finding, the Director General of the DSS, Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, ordered their immediate release. The three men, identified as Umar Ibrahim, Alhaji Bello Rabiu and Jaja Sarki Bamo, were also granted financial compensation approved by the DSS leadership. The payment is intended to acknowledge the error in their arrest and to support their reintegration after months in custody. Security sources indicated that […]

BBC Apologises to Trump Over Panorama Edit but Refuses Compensation

The BBC has formally apologised to former US President Donald Trump for an episode of Panorama that edited and spliced segments of his 6 January 2021 speech, admitting it gave “the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action.” The corporation said it will not re-air the 2024 programme but rejected Trump’s demand for a $1bn compensation, citing no legal basis for a defamation claim. Lawyers for Trump have threatened to sue the BBC unless it issues a retraction, apology, and financial compensation, but the BBC insisted the edit was not designed to mislead and did not cause Trump harm as he was later re-elected. The documentary, restricted to UK viewers, was only 12 seconds of an hour-long programme. The fallout led to the resignation of top BBC executives. The apology follows fresh revelations of […]

EU Court Rules Dogs in Cargo Are ‘Baggage’ for Airlines

The European Union's top court has ruled that dogs traveling in an airplane's cargo hold are legally considered "baggage," limiting the compensation airlines must pay if they are lost. The ruling came from a case involving Spanish airline Iberia and a passenger whose dog escaped and went missing during a flight from Buenos Aires to Barcelona in 2019. The passenger sought €5,000 in damages, but the court sided with the airline. The court stated that even though the term "baggage" typically refers to objects, pets are not excluded from the concept. This means compensation is limited to the standard amount for lost luggage under international air travel treaties, unless a passenger makes a special declaration of value for the pet at check-in.
