Morocco under pressure as AFCON begins

Host nation Morocco enter the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations under intense pressure to deliver the title as the continent’s top ranked team and World Cup semi finalists. The Atlas Lions open the tournament on Sunday night against Comoros at the new 69,000 seat Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat.​ Morocco are ranked 11th in the world by FIFA and arrive at AFCON on the back of a record run of 18 consecutive victories in all competitions. AFCON 2025 prize money and five biggest shocks in tournament history

The Africa Cup of Nations has grown into one of world football’s most lucrative international tournaments, with AFCON 2025 in Morocco set to offer a record prize pool of 32 million dollars. According to CAF’s official breakdown, the champions will earn 7 million dollars, the runners up 4 million dollars and the two beaten semi finalists 2.5 million dollars each.​ Quarter finalists will receive 1.3 million dollars per team, while all eight nations knocked out in the Round of 16 get 800,000 dollars each.
