GAWU Launches Initiative to Combat Child Labour in Volta Fishing Communities.

In response to a troubling surge of over 4,000 teenage pregnancies in the Oti Region from 2023 to August 2024, the Oti Regional Co-ordinating Council, in partnership with the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Social Welfare Department, and UNFPA, has called on okada riders in Krachi East to help tackle the issue.During a workshop in Dambai, Juliet Akorfa Akorlie, Adolescent Focal Person, urged the riders to engage teens in conversations about sexual health and promote responsible behavior. The growing trend of teenage pregnancies threatens the health, education, and future economic potential of these young girls.Okada riders responded positively, committing to using their community influence to guide and educate the youth on avoiding risky behavior and accessing available support services like counseling and health clinics.
