NIWA to recruit 800 water marshals to boost safety nationwide

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has announced plans to recruit and deploy 800 water marshals across Nigeria by December 2025. According to NIWA’s Managing Director, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, the move is aimed at improving safety, curbing incessant boat mishaps, enforcing life jacket compliance, and monitoring unauthorised loading points. Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, Oyebamiji said the marshals would also be tasked with sensitising passengers and operators on safe navigation practices. “The Federal Government is doing a wonderful job on water safety. We currently have between 350 and 450 water marshals, but the goal is to increase the number to ensure authorised jetties across the country have more than one marshal to enforce safety rules,” he said.
