UK logs 2025 as sunniest year on record, Met Office confirms
Meteorologists say Britain, often known for cloudy and wet weather, has just experienced its sunniest year on record in 2025. Provisional Met Office data show that by 15 December the UK had already recorded around 1,622 hours of sunshine, surpassing the previous full-year record set in 2003. Forecasters attribute the exceptional sunshine to frequent periods of high pressure that dominated much of the year, reducing cloud cover and locking in clear skies for long stretches. Apart from February and October, every month in 2025 recorded above-average sunshine hours, making the year stand out even by recent warmer, sunnier standards.
