Ghana Declares September 6 as National Sanitation Day

Ghana’s Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has declared September 6 as National Sanitation Day under the Clean-Up Ghana Agenda. The initiative, announced by Minister Ahmed Ibrahim, will see a nationwide cleanup on the first Saturday of every month across all 16 regions. The exercise will serve as a key performance indicator for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, with high performers rewarded and poor performers risking removal from office. The government has released the MMDCEs’ common fund to support the programme and set up a call center for citizens to report waste management concerns. Motorcycles have also been distributed for patrols to ensure compliance. John Desmond Sowah Nai, Dean of Municipal Chief Executives, pledged the commitment of local authorities to maintaining a clean and healthy environment nationwide.
