FG launches Waste Marketplace to turn waste into economic assets

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Environment and the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), has launched the National Waste Marketplace Programme (NWMP) — a landmark initiative designed to convert waste streams into economic assets and strengthen Nigeria’s circular economy. The programme, developed in collaboration with RecycleStack, was officially unveiled on Thursday during a sensitisation workshop in Abuja. Speaking at the event, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, described the NWMP as a “practical step towards modernising Nigeria’s waste management system and mainstreaming circular economy principles.” According to Lawal, the digital platform will formalise the nation’s waste value chain by connecting waste generators, collectors, aggregators, and recyclers to end-users through a transparent, traceable, and technology-driven system. ISSER Urges Government to Treat Waste Management as an Economic Growth Strategy

Experts from the University of Ghana’s Institute of Statistical, Social and Economic Research (ISSER) are calling on government to redefine waste management as an engine for economic growth, rather than treating it solely as a public health challenge. In a new policy paper titled “The High Cost of Improper Waste Management and Poor Sanitation on Ghana’s Economy,” the ISSER team argues that effective sanitation systems could generate billions in economic value, create new employment opportunities, and improve environmental outcomes. According to the report, every US$1 invested in sanitation could yield up to US$5.50 in economic returns, based on data from the World Health Organization (WHO). Green Growth Ghana Project Empowers Women and Youth in Upper west Region.

The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI), in partnership with Presbyterian University Ghana and the EU Delegation in Ghana, launched the "Green Growth Ghana Project" in Wa on October 9, 2024. The initiative is aimed at economically empowering women and youth in the Northern Savannah Regions through the green and circular economy. The project focuses on training and supporting small-scale enterprises in agro-forestry and environmentally sustainable business practices. It aligns with several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including gender equality and climate action. During the event, the GNCCI President, Dr. Clement Osei-Amoako, highlighted the importance of sustainable business practices for addressing challenges like climate change and economic dependence on agriculture. The event also awarded outstanding businesses, with the Naa-Momori Technical Institute receiving sewing machines.
