Reps seek tighter defence accountability in 2026 budget

The House of Representatives Committee on Defence has called for stricter accountability, result driven spending and a comprehensive security strategy in the 2026 defence budget. Chairman of the committee, Babajimi Benson, made the call in Abuja as the panel began budget defence sessions with the Ministry of Defence and its agencies. Benson described the exercise as a sacred constitutional duty and a key stage in the appropriation process. He said it provides a platform for rigorous scrutiny, constructive engagement and mutual accountability in the interest of national security. He praised the Armed Forces and security agencies for gains recorded against insurgency, terrorism and other crimes across various theatres of operation. However, he warned that persistent security challenges show the need for deeper reforms, better coordination and smarter use of limited resources. Benson stressed that higher allocations must come with measurable […]

Gen Musa: How coup attempt was foiled at planning stage

Defence Minister General Christopher Musa has revealed how Nigerian security agencies foiled a planned coup at the “planning stage”, describing the plotters as a disgruntled group led by a colonel who failed promotion to brigadier general. Speaking on Channels Television, Musa said the officer, angered by his failure to meet promotion requirements, began mobilising other aggrieved elements within the Armed Forces, but joint monitoring by the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA), National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Department of State Services (DSS) and other security outfits exposed the plot early. He explained that this was why the military initially denied rumours of a coup last October, insisting investigators needed time to identify the real conspirators and avoid arresting innocent officers. The Defence Headquarters has now confirmed that investigations indicted 16 officers who will face court martial, though Musa declined to name the mastermind […]

Brains behind alleged coup knew the consequences – Defence Minister

Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd), says the military officers detained over the recent alleged coup plot were fully aware of the gravity of their actions before moving against the government. Speaking in an interview with Turkish public broadcaster TRT, Musa said the suspects “must have made up their minds when they decided to do this and must have considered their families,” insisting they are prepared to “face the wrath” if found guilty. His comments followed complaints from some relatives who alleged witch hunt in the arrests. The Defence Headquarters had earlier confirmed that investigations conducted under military procedures uncovered involvement of some personnel in an alleged plot to overthrow the government. It said those found culpable would be arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels in line with the Armed Forces Act and service regulations. Musa assured that the […]

Cross-border security cooperation ‘stopped Benin coup’

Nigerian ministers have credited fast cross-border coordination with helping Benin Republic crush a recent coup attempt and restore order within hours. Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and Defence Minister, Christopher Musa, explained in Abuja that Benin requested urgent military support after rogue soldiers tried to seize power in Cotonou. They said Nigeria worked closely with Benin and other ECOWAS states, including Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana and Sierra Leone, to respond before the mutiny could spread or cause mass casualties. According to the ministers, Beninese forces remained in charge of operations on the ground, but regional backing was crucial in securing key locations and denying the plotters access to strategic sites such as the airport and national television. Nigeria’s support reportedly included the deployment of Air Force fighter jets to help secure Benin’s airspace and dislodge mutineers from a military […]

Report: Why ex defence minister Badaru really resigned

Fresh details have emerged suggesting that former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, was pressured to resign not only over health concerns but also because of a long running rift with Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, and mounting criticism of his handling of insecurity. Badaru, who was appointed defence minister in August 2023 after serving two terms as Jigawa State governor, formally resigned on Monday after about two years in office, with the Presidency announcing that he stepped down due to “poor health”, while President Bola Tinubu immediately swore in former Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa (retd.), as his replacement. However, multiple senior defence ministry and military sources told Saturday Punch that a “frosty relationship” between Badaru and Matawalle had quietly destabilised parts of the ministry’s work for months, even though both men maintained a cordial […]

We’ll defeat terror, restore order and peace, say Defense Minister, NSA

Defence Minister General Christopher Musa and National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu have assured Nigerians that the country will defeat terrorism and restore order and peace despite current security challenges. Speaking at separate security forums in Abuja, both officials described terrorists, bandits and other violent groups as “evil” and vowed that the government would not give up or surrender in the fight against them. Ribadu warned that any individual or group seeking to spread terror, exploit communities or undermine national unity would face decisive, coordinated and uncompromising action from security agencies. He stressed that lasting peace cannot be achieved by government alone, calling for a “whole of society” approach that involves traditional and religious leaders, civil society, youth and women’s groups, the private sector and international partners. The NSA said his office has directed the National Counter Terrorism Centre to intensify […]
