Their reaction follows reported plans by Katsina State governor, Dikko Radda, to grant amnesty to about 70 terrorists as part of a peace deal in the state and neighbouring areas. The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, through the Special Adviser to the President on Communications and Publicity in the AGF’s office, Kamarudeen Ogundele, noted that governors have constitutional powers to grant pardon, provided the offenders were prosecuted under state laws. The Lagos State Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro, SAN, agreed that governors can exercise clemency but stressed that they must consider public opinion, public policy, and the likely reaction of citizens when doing so. He added that Lagos, for instance, has a policy against granting […]

He added that celebrities doing meet and greets have had unpleasant experiences, while some front desk staff allegedly influence customers away from certain films through biased suggestions. Ogbonna urged cinema operators and the producers involved in such actions to stop, warning that these tactics are damaging the entire industry. AGN president urges CAN to reconsider stance on Ini Edo’s A Very Dirty Christmas

Outgoing Actors Guild of Nigeria president, Dr Ejezie Emeka Rollas, has called for calm and constructive dialogue between the Christian Association of Nigeria and the creative industry over reactions to Ini Edo’s film A Very Dirty Christmas. CAN had described the movie’s title as offensive to Christianity. Rollas argued that the title is not an insult to the Christian faith but a metaphorical and creative expression. He said it was intended to reflect the complex and sometimes messy realities that can surround the Christmas season, not to mock or trivialise Christian beliefs. In a statement, he noted that a full viewing of the film shows no scenes that ridicule or undermine Christianity. According to him, criticisms based only on the title would benefit from a more complete engagement with the movie itself. Rollas stressed that Christmas remains a sacred season […]

CAN Accuses Presidency of Distorting Its Stance on Christian Killings

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has publicly accused the Presidency of misrepresenting its position on the killings of Christians in the country, leading to a dispute after a meeting meant to foster dialogue. CAN stated that it did not, at any point, dismiss the violence as a "so-called Christian genocide," contrary to a press release from the President's media aide, Daniel Bwala. The association insists that the persistent, organized attacks on Christian communities in Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt amount to a "Christian genocide." CAN expressed deep disappointment, stating that the Presidency's report was "completely false and grossly unfair." They clarified that their position remains unchanged and that the government's portrayal trivializes the pain of the victims. The Christian body is now calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to act with urgency and transparency to halt […]
