Lagos DSVA: Simi cannot be prosecuted without evidence

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has said it cannot prosecute singer Simi over her resurfaced 2012 tweets without concrete evidence or testimony from alleged victims. Executive Secretary of the agency, Lola Vivour Adeniyi, explained on Channels Television’s Morning Brief that the DSVA has a duty to begin a preliminary review of the matter because of the public outcry. She stressed, however, that the law requires statements or cooperation from survivors before any case can move forward. Vivour Adeniyi said it would be very difficult to take formal legal action against the artist in the absence of a complainant. She urged anyone who may have experienced sexual abuse, assault or defilement to come forward so that their account can be documented and proper procedures commenced. Simi’s old tweets resurfaced after she spoke out strongly against rape, with some […]

Police say N100m paid into IGP’s son’s account was bank error

The Nigeria Police Force has said the N100 million paid into the personal bank account of Victor Egbetokun, son of the outgoing Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, was a banking error that was quickly corrected. Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, gave the clarification while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, following an online report that claimed the money came from the Anambra State Government’s security vote account. Hundeyin said Victor himself reported the suspicious credit to his bank and asked that the money be reversed immediately. He explained that after seeing the unexpected N100 million alert, Victor contacted his account officer and insisted the funds be returned to the sender at once. “He printed out his statement of account and showed me,” Hundeyin said, noting that the transaction history confirmed that the money had been sent back. He […]

NNPP insists no link between Kwankwaso and extremists

The New Nigeria Peoples Party has rejected moves in the United States to sanction its national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, insisting there is no evidence tying him to any extremist organisation. NNPP campaign secretary Folashade Aliu said on Channels Television that the proposed bill, which also mentions Miyetti Allah groups, is unjust and malicious. She challenged the bill’s sponsors to present any proof they claim to have against Kwankwaso. Aliu questioned why one individual would be singled out in a country of over 260 million people on an issue as sensitive as religion and terrorism. She argued that the focus on Kwankwaso raises serious doubts about the true intent behind the legislative move. According to her, even a small fraction of Nigeria’s population in leadership positions would still amount to many people capable of offering solutions to national problems. She […]

Military should have apologised after denying coup plot – Falana

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has faulted the Nigerian military for failing to apologise to citizens after initially denying any coup plot, only to later confirm that some officers would face trial over an alleged scheme to overthrow the government. He said people in authority must learn to take Nigerians seriously and correct themselves publicly when previous statements turn out to be misleading. Falana recalled that in October 2025 the military dismissed claims linking the cancellation of the Independence Day parade to a coup plot as “false and malicious” and capable of creating unnecessary tension. He argued that once investigations showed the matter went beyond mere indiscipline, the military ought to have admitted this and apologised instead of quietly reversing its position. The lawyer also questioned the plan to try the detained officers by court martial, insisting that allegations […]
