Hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police in Tanzania’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, for a third consecutive day on Friday, demanding that the national electoral commission halt the release of election results after a chaotic and contested vote. The protests erupted amid a government crackdown that has included military deployment and a near-total internet shutdown. On Thursday, security forces fired tear gas and live ammunition at protesters in the Mbagala, Gongo la Mboto, and Kiluvya neighbourhoods as residents defied a government-imposed curfew.
