ByteDance deal moves TikTok closer to avoiding US ban

TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, has signed binding agreements with US and international investors to restructure the app’s operations in the United States, a move aimed at preventing a nationwide ban. In a memo to staff, TikTok chief executive Shou Zi Chew said the deal would establish a new joint venture to run the platform’s US business. The agreement is expected to close on 22 January and would resolve long-standing concerns in Washington over national security and data protection. Under the arrangement, a consortium of investors including Oracle, Silver Lake and Abu Dhabi-based investment firm MGX will collectively own 50% of the new entity. ByteDance will retain a minority stake of 19.9%, while affiliates of existing ByteDance investors will hold the remaining shares. The structure closely follows a framework announced in September, when US President Donald Trump delayed enforcement of a […]

TikTok US-China deal nears as Trump, Xi weigh terms

A long-awaited deal over TikTok may be within reach, with US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping set to discuss terms on Friday. Officials from both countries struck a “framework” agreement this week that could see TikTok’s US operations sold to a group of American firms, including Oracle and investment giants Andreessen Horowitz and Silver Lake. Reports suggest US users could soon get a new American-specific version of the app. Experts say the deal would mark a “rare breakthrough” in strained US-China trade negotiations, potentially easing years of tensions around the app’s future. For TikTok’s 170 million American users, however, the biggest question remains: what happens to the algorithm? Often described as TikTok’s “secret sauce,” the recommendation engine is the core of its global appeal. While Instagram’s Reels and YouTube’s Shorts have tried to copy it, they fall […]

The United States is “very close” to finalising a deal with China over TikTok, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Monday as trade talks resumed in Madrid. Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng opened discussions on Sunday, aiming to ease tensions over trade and technology between the world’s two largest economies. The meetings will run until Wednesday — the deadline for TikTok to secure a buyer or face a ban in the US. “On the TikTok deal itself, we’re very close to resolving the issue,” Bessent told reporters on arrival at Spain’s foreign ministry for the second day of talks.“If we don’t reach an agreement on TikTok, it doesn’t affect the overall relationship between the two countries. It’s still very good at the highest levels,” he added. TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance faces a US law requiring the platform’s […]
