Road Works Continue in Akwatia After By-Election

Road construction works in parts of Akwatia are still ongoing days after Tuesday’s by-election, despite earlier suspicions that the projects were quickly rolled out to influence voters. JoyNews observed active roadworks across the constituency, including in Kusi and Tarkrowase, the hometowns of both parents of MP-elect Bernard Bediako. A day after the polls, tipper trucks and graders were still on site, with construction teams preparing the roads for asphalting. Similar activity was recorded in Tarkrowase. A contractor working on some of the projects, who spoke off the record, revealed that the roads had been abandoned for nearly seven years. APC Wins Ghari/Tsanyawa By-Election in Kano

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the state assembly by-election in the Ghari/Tsanyawa constituency of Kano State. Announcing the results on Sunday, the Returning Officer, Prof. Muhammad Waziri of Bayero University, declared the APC candidate, Garba Gwarmai, winner after he secured 31,472 votes. His closest rival, Yusuf Ali Maigado of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), polled 27,931 votes. Prof. Waziri explained that the supplementary election was conducted after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the earlier poll inconclusive due to irregularities in some polling units. “With a margin of 3,541 votes, Garba Gwarmai of the APC has met all legal requirements and is hereby returned elected,” Waziri said. By-election: Kano Police Pledge Maximum Security for Voters

The Kano State Police Command has assured residents of full security during Saturday’s bye-elections in Bagwai/Shanono and Ghari/Tsanyawa. Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, said on Friday that all security agencies in the state were working together to ensure the elections are peaceful and free from violence. According to him, detailed operational instructions have been issued to officers stationed at every polling unit in the affected areas. He added that enough armed personnel have been deployed to provide protection before, during, and after the polls.
