Minister pushes for launch of Nigeria–Israel joint commission

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, has called for the full take off of the Nigeria–Israel Joint Commission to deepen cooperation between both countries. She made the appeal while hosting the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, at Tafawa Balewa House in Abuja. According to a statement by her media aide, Dr Magnus Eze, their talks covered defence and intelligence, economic ties, consular matters, religious tourism and wider bilateral and multilateral issues. Odumegwu Ojukwu said Nigeria has much to learn from Israel’s experience in border security management, especially in the fight against insurgency and terrorism. She noted that such collaboration would be easier to drive once the joint commission is operational. The minister also commended Israel for its plan to donate about 50 to 60 fully equipped ambulances to Nigeria, starting with an initial batch of […]

UK Introduces Mandatory ETA for Visitors

A new electronic travel requirement for visitors to the UK takes effect on Wednesday, affecting citizens from dozens of countries, including the United States and Australia. The UK government says the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system is designed to modernise border controls and strengthen security. However, the rollout has created complications for some dual nationals, who are now required to present specific documentation to re-enter the country. What is an ETA and who must apply? An ETA is a digital travel permission required for nationals of 85 countries who previously could enter the UK without a visa. From 25 February, eligible travellers must obtain this authorisation before departure. Once granted, an ETA allows stays of up to six months for tourism, business or short-term study. It is valid for two years, or until the passport used in the application expires, […]

Southwest in Joint Moves to Prevent Terrorists’ Incursion into Region

In a landmark move, Southwest governors have launched a joint strategy to prevent terrorist incursion, agreeing to establish a regional security fund, a digital intelligence-sharing platform, and reinforce forest surveillance. State leaders also called for stricter regulation of inter-state migration and action against illegal mining, while reiterating support for state police. At a crucial summit in Ibadan led by Governor Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Makinde (Oyo), Abiodun (Ogun), Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Oyebanji (Ekiti), and Adeleke’s deputy (Osun), the governors resolved to set up a South West Security Fund (SWSF) under the DAWN Commission, and a live digital security communication channel linking all six states for coordinated rapid response. Forest surveillance and documentation of foreigners and unauthorized settlements are to be intensified, while over 70 illegal migrants were reportedly arrested in Ogun alone. The summit commended security agencies, including Amotekun and NSCDC, for ongoing […]

Chad Shuts Border as Terrorists Plan to Flee Northern Nigeria Over Alleged US Military Action

The Government of Chad has announced the immediate closure of its border with Nigeria, citing security concerns following reports of a possible United States military operation over alleged Christian killings in northern Nigeria. Military sources in N’Djamena, which hosts the headquarters of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), confirmed on Monday that President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno ordered a complete military lockdown along the Chadian–Nigerian border. According to the sources, intelligence reports indicated that terrorist elements in northern Nigeria were preparing to flee across the border into Chad to evade possible airstrikes or ground assaults linked to the purported U.S. military plan. “The president has ordered that no armed group or foreign force will be allowed to enter Chadian soil under any disguise,” a senior military officer said. The Chadian army has reportedly been placed on full combat alert, with […]

Trump Ends Protection for 250,000 Venezuelan Migrants

The Trump administration has announced it will terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 256,000 Venezuelan migrants, opening the way for large-scale deportations. TPS was first granted under President Joe Biden in 2021 and expanded in 2023, allowing eligible Venezuelans to obtain work permits and protection from removal. A Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson said the decision was based on “public safety, national security, migration factors, immigration policy, economic considerations, and foreign policy.” The spokesperson added that TPS had created “a magnet effect” for irregular migration and undermined the Trump administration’s border security efforts. The protections will formally expire on September 10, but DHS clarified that the termination will take effect 60 days after its notice is published in the Federal Register. Pending applications — including 3,728 new requests and more than 102,000 renewals — will also be […]
