Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of military aggression and backing rebels

Ethiopia’s foreign minister has accused neighbouring Eritrea of military aggression and interference, alleging that Eritrean forces are occupying Ethiopian territory and backing armed groups operating inside the country. The accusations mark a sharp escalation in tensions between the two Horn of Africa neighbours, whose relationship has deteriorated since the end of Ethiopia’s war in the northern Tigray region. Ethiopia and Eritrea fought a devastating border war between 1998 and 2000 before signing a landmark peace agreement in 2018. They later became allies during Ethiopia’s two-year conflict with Tigray authorities. However, Eritrea was not a signatory to the 2022 peace deal that ended the Tigray war, and relations have steadily worsened since then.  China says US is trying to block closer India ties

China has accused the United States of twisting its defence policy in an effort to block closer ties between Beijing and New Delhi. Foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks in Beijing while reacting to a U.S. Pentagon report on China’s approach to India. The report suggested China may seek to use easing border tensions with India to curb the growth of U.S.–India relations. Lin said China views its relationship with India from a long term and strategic perspective. He added that the border issue is strictly a matter between the two neighbours. He said China opposes any outside country commenting on or interfering in the border dispute. Lin also rejected what he called U.S. attempts to misrepresent China’s defence policy.

This decision follows the most severe escalation along the Thailand–Cambodia border in over a decade—claiming more than 30 lives (13 in Thailand, 8 in Cambodia) and forcing over 200,000 civilians to flee their homes. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, serving as ASEAN Chair, initially proposed the talks, which gained momentum after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened […]
